Summarise and present a criteria's/measure's performance

The aim with the seminar is to deepen your understanding about how a criteria and/or measure is used to decide a factor important in your research field.

The task is to interpret and discuss a presented performance evaluation of a critera/measure in a research publication or report related to your research field. The report should contain information on one or several of: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, ROC/AUC, or calibration (note that in some fields other names may be used than these for the same measures). It may present evaluations which have been divided into subgroups, eg. age, gender, hospitals, etc.

Write a short summary based on the questions below, and email a pdf to the course leader no later than 1 hour before the seminar. You will present your findings at the seminar.

The following questions should be addressed in your summary, and presented at the seminar:

  • What is being predicted, ie. which factor and what is it supposed to represent? Describe briefly.
  • What's your source of information? Please specify publication with page/figure/table number. Include a screen shot of key figures/tables.
  • What are the main findings with respect to predictive performance?
  • What is your interpretation of the findings? Please describe the big picture rather than retelling the details.
  • Is the interpretation of the evaluation congruent with your prior expectations? (Why/Why not?)
  • Can you briefly describe any factors that may challenge the validity and/or jeopardize the interpretation of the findings?
  • How are the findings useful in your research?
  • Can you give an example of action/change in data collection or change in analytical approach that would increase the usefulness of the findings?
